That is why Spot UV on bridge decks usually works better on back designs, logos, or a few controlled decorative areas. Spot UV is fine when it stays on parts of the card that are not doing the reading job. Once it starts moving into the wrong areas, the deck stops feeling clean and starts becoming harder to use.

Card Layout & Artwork Setup
Artwork setup is not a visual step — it defines how tolerant the deck is in production.
Most alignment issues are not printing defects. They come from layout decisions made too early, before production limits are considered.
Thin borders, centered frames, or front-to-back positional matching all reduce tolerance. Even normal cutting variation becomes visible under these conditions.
These problems rarely show in the first sample. They appear later — during full production or repeat runs.

Most “misaligned cards” complaints come from border design, not printing accuracy.
Custom Spot UV Bridge Cards
Spot UV on bridge cards usually stops being a layout decision once the deck is actually in hand. Bridge players often fan and compare several cards at the same time, so gloss near the values, suit marks, or corner information starts getting noticed very quickly. On this format, the problem is not whether the finish looks good on one card. The problem is whether the deck still reads cleanly once it is being used like a real bridge deck.
The other place where trouble starts is registration. Bridge cards leave less spare room in the layout, so the gloss has less space to drift before it starts looking wrong against the print. On a larger card, small movement may pass. On bridge cards, it usually shows faster, especially once the cards are fanned in hand and the eye starts moving from one card to the next. That becomes even more important on repeat orders, where customers are no longer only noticing the artwork. They are also noticing whether the gloss still lands as cleanly as it did the first time.
That is why Spot UV usually works better on commemorative bridge decks, gift products, and other presentation-led projects where the finish is part of the point. On decks that still need to fan easily and read fast in hand, the gloss usually has to stay away from the working parts of the face. Once it moves into the wrong place, the deck starts becoming harder to use than it needs to be.
