For bridge size playing cards, back-only printing is often the easier and more practical route when the face side needs to stay familiar in actual play. This format is usually chosen for games where players hold more cards in hand, so keeping the front clear and standard often matters more than adding extra customization there. In that kind of project, putting the custom work on the back is usually enough.
This setup is commonly used for corporate decks, commemorative editions, and promotional bridge-style card projects. The gameplay side stays straightforward, while the back carries the event theme, logo, or brand image.

Card Layout & Artwork Setup
Artwork setup is not a visual step — it defines how tolerant the deck is in production.
Most alignment issues are not printing defects. They come from layout decisions made too early, before production limits are considered.
Thin borders, centered frames, or front-to-back positional matching all reduce tolerance. Even normal cutting variation becomes visible under these conditions.
These problems rarely show in the first sample. They appear later — during full production or repeat runs.
Layout determines tolerance.
Full bleed hides variation. Centered layouts reveal it.
Most “misaligned cards” complaints come from border design, not printing accuracy.
Custom Back Bridge Cards
On bridge-size cards, keeping the deck visually steady matters even more because the format is narrow and players usually hold a lot of cards at once. Small inconsistencies show faster in hand than many people expect. When only the back is customized, the job is easier to control and there is less chance of the deck looking uneven from batch to batch. That is one reason this structure is often the safer choice for repeat runs.
For the stock, we usually decide it from the actual use case. If the deck needs better opacity, a firmer feel, or something closer to a standard retail card deck, black-core is still the safer option. If the project is more cost-sensitive and the usage is lighter, a good standard stock may already be enough. In most bridge-size projects, this is not a theory question. It usually comes down to budget, handling feel, and how hard the deck will be used.
This setup is common for bridge-style decks, whist decks, club editions, company gifts, and other branded card projects where the front should stay easy to read and familiar to the player. The back carries the custom part, and for this type of job, that is usually all that is needed.
It starts to fall apart when the face side also needs custom gameplay content, or when the artwork on both sides is supposed to work together very precisely. Once the project depends on that, back-only is usually no longer the right structure.
