For poker size playing cards, plastic should not be treated as paper cards with extra durability added on top. Once the deck goes to PVC or PET, it no longer feels like a normal paper poker deck. The hand feel changes first. Then the shuffle starts feeling different too. Even the printed face will not read exactly the way it does on paper.
Plastic works better when the deck is expected to stay in use around moisture, repeated handling, or rougher conditions. It lasts well, but anyone expecting normal paper-card feel will notice the difference very quickly once the deck is actually in hand.

Card Layout & Artwork Setup
Artwork setup is not a visual step — it defines how tolerant the deck is in production.
Most alignment issues are not printing defects. They come from layout decisions made too early, before production limits are considered.
Thin borders, centered frames, or front-to-back positional matching all reduce tolerance. Even normal cutting variation becomes visible under these conditions.
These problems rarely show in the first sample. They appear later — during full production or repeat runs.
Layout determines tolerance.
Full bleed hides variation. Centered layouts reveal it.
Most “misaligned cards” complaints come from border design, not printing accuracy.

Plastic poker cards start showing their value only after the deck has been used for a while. Water, bending, creasing, and repeated handling do much less to them than they would to a paper deck. That is why this material is easier to justify in casinos, outdoor use, cruise settings, hospitality projects, and other places where the cards are expected to stay in service instead of being treated gently.
The trade-off usually shows first in the print result. Plastic changes the print result in a way paper does not. Artwork that depends on gradients, tonal depth, or a softer illustrated look can lose some of its weight once it is printed on PVC or PET. Stronger contrast and bolder graphics usually hold up better.
Handling changes too. It also feels different straight away. Plastic usually feels slicker than paper, and that starts becoming obvious very quickly once the deck is shuffled. Some users like that slicker movement. Others find it less controlled than a normal paper poker deck. That part is hard to judge from a spec sheet alone. It usually becomes clear only once the sample is actually in hand.
The other reality is setup. Plastic is not usually the easy option for small runs. The fixed cost is higher, and the MOQ often lands above what a paper deck would ask for. For that reason, plastic tends to work better on decks built for long life, rougher conditions, or repeated service use. It gets much harder to justify on small-batch projects, collector decks that care about print character, or designs where traditional paper feel is still part of the product.
