Poker Size Playing Cards(Spot UV)
For poker size playing cards, Spot UV should not be treated as a finish that can be dropped onto the artwork at the very end. Once part of the card face turns glossy, that area starts catching light differently from the rest of the design. It becomes more noticeable immediately, which is why Spot UV can help the right element stand out very fast — and can also start causing trouble just as fast if it is pushed into the wrong place.
That is why Spot UV usually works best on logos, suit marks, titles, and other controlled elements that are supposed to pull attention first. On poker decks that still need to read quickly and handle like normal playing cards, the gloss area usually has to stay selective. Once too much of the face starts reflecting light, the finish stops helping the layout and starts competing with it.

Card Layout & Artwork Setup
Artwork setup is not a visual step — it defines how tolerant the deck is in production.
Most alignment issues are not printing defects. They come from layout decisions made too early, before production limits are considered.
Thin borders, centered frames, or front-to-back positional matching all reduce tolerance. Even normal cutting variation becomes visible under these conditions.
These problems rarely show in the first sample. They appear later — during full production or repeat runs.

Layout determines tolerance.
Full bleed hides variation. Centered layouts reveal it.
Most “misaligned cards” complaints come from border design, not printing accuracy.
Custom Spot UV Poker Cards (playing cards) — A Tactile Masterpiece
Spot UV does not really show its full effect in the flat file. It starts showing only when the card is in hand and the surface is catching real light. That is where the gloss stops behaving like a small finish detail and starts changing how the face is read. On the right element, it can give the card a stronger focal point straight away. On the wrong element, it starts pulling attention away from parts of the card that still need to stay clear.
That is why Spot UV usually works best when it stays on one job. Logos, suit marks, titles, and other lead elements can carry it well because they are supposed to be noticed first. Once the gloss starts spreading into dense graphics, small text, or larger functional areas, the card usually becomes harder to read instead of stronger. The problem is not the coating by itself. The problem starts when the reflective area begins competing with the rest of the layout.
The other place where projects go wrong is registration. Spot UV still has to land cleanly against the print, and gloss gives very little room to hide drift once the card is under light. On screen, the file may still look fine. The mismatch usually becomes obvious only after sampling, when the glossy area is no longer sitting exactly where the design expected it to be. That is why the finish needs to be checked early, especially on decks that may come back for repeat orders later.
Handling also changes once the gloss area is pushed too far. A small controlled Spot UV area is usually not a problem. But once too much of the card face turns slick, the deck can start feeling different in shuffling and stacking. That is why Spot UV usually works better as a selective finish than as a dominant surface treatment on gameplay-driven poker decks.
