For rigid game boxes, we typically use 2.0 to 2.5 mm greyboard, depending on box dimensions and total component weight. If you have lots of different pieces, we can add a custom insert to keep everything organized and make the final package more stable.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom game boxes?

Accepted Answer

We can make 1 prototype box first to check dimensions, structure, greyboard thickness, and artwork placement against the actual components.

For volume production, we suggest 500 boxes. At that quantity, costs for plate setup, greyboard cutting, wrapping, and material waste are distributed across enough units to bring the per-box price down.

Can I get a custom insert with my game box?

Yes. We can make various inserts: EVA foam, cardboard trays, vacuum-formed plastic trays, pulp trays, and paperboard inserts. The right choice depends on component types, weight, quantities, protection needs, and budget.

Cardboard and paperboard inserts usually cost less for materials but may need more hand labor for folding and assembly. EVA foam gives better protection but costs significantly more, especially if shapes need custom cutting.

For organizing lots of pieces, vacuum trays and pulp trays work better, though they require molds so they're more suited to larger production runs.

What is the difference between varnish and lamination for game boxes?

Accepted Answer

Varnish is a thin coating applied to the printed box surface. It's cheaper but offers limited protection, so it suits budget-sensitive projects.

Lamination bonds a plastic film to the printed paper — matte or gloss. It gives the box surface much better protection against scuffing, wear, and moisture. For retail board games, Kickstarter editions, or anything that'll see repeated handling and shipping, lamination is usually the better call.

For most complete game boxes, we use lamination unless the budget is extremely tight.

For two-piece boxes, lid fit depends on the gap between lid and base, greyboard thickness, wrap structure, and normal material tolerances.

We don't rely on drawings alone — we usually make a physical prototype to check lid fit before mass production, making sure it opens and closes smoothly.

If there's an insert inside, its height has to match the box depth. An insert that's too tall can push against the lid and prevent the box from closing. The approved sample becomes our main production reference.

What file format do I need for box artwork?

We prefer press-ready PDF or AI files. Convert all text to outlines, embed images, use CMYK at 300 dpi minimum, and include 3 mm bleed on all sides.

Box artwork needs to be built on a clear die-line template, which we can provide after box dimensions and structure are confirmed, or your designer can supply.

We also double-check panel orientation carefully — if the die-line layout isn't followed precisely, side text or logos can end up upside down.

Do you offer eco-friendly or FSC-certified game boxes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can produce FSC-certified game boxes and eco-friendly packaging. Options include FSC-certified paper, FSC greyboard, recycled board, and paper inserts as alternatives to plastic trays.

The decision to use FSC-certified materials has to be made before we purchase raw materials, not after production starts. If your project needs FSC logos on the box, retailer compliance, or specific environmental claims, we need to confirm material sources and documentation requirements before quoting and sampling.

FSC-certified paper and greyboard typically cost more than standard options.

After box dimensions, structure, die-line, and artwork are confirmed, a custom box prototype takes about 5-7 days.

Most custom game boxes run 10-15 days for volume production. Actual lead time depends on order quantity, box structure, wrapping process, and surface finishing complexity.

Once the Golden Sample is approved, volume production follows it as the primary reference. This helps ensure the finished boxes match the confirmed design in structure and appearance, within normal tolerances for greyboard, wrapping, and printing.
